Keynote

David Maggs

David Maggs is active in his career as an interdisciplinary artist and researcher focused on arts, climate change, and sustainability. A student of Jane Coop, Andre Laplante, and Marc Durand, he is the founder and pianist for Dark by Five, has written works for the stage, and collaborated on large augmented reality and virtual reality projects (see Mummer’s Journey) which have been included in the UK’s Future of Live Performance Spotlight Gallery. David is the artistic director of the rural Canadian inter-arts organization Gros Morne Summer Music, and founder and co-director of the Graham Academy. He initiated and co-produced the CBC doc channel film The Country along with leaders from Newfoundland’s Mi’kmaw community, exploring the Canadian government’s handling of Indigenous identity in Newfoundland.

As a fellow at the University of Toronto’s Munk School for Global Affairs, David co-authored Sustainability in an Imaginary World (Routledge Press, 2020) with mentor and long time collaborator John Robinson, exploring the relationship between art and sustainability. He is former senior fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Sustainability in Potsdam, Germany, where he led work on culture and climate change. As Innovation Fellow with the Metcalf Foundation, David wrote Art and the World After This (2021), an extensive report on the disruption and transformation of the arts in the wake of COVID-19. The impact of this report has led to the creation of a new position within the Metcalf Foundation and as the inaugural Fellow on Arts and Society, David is exploring the role of art in society, with particular focus on innovation, climate change, and cultural policy.

Panelists

Panel moderator: Randy Joynt, Executive Director, Manitoba Arts Council

Following a 20-year career in contemporary dance, Randy Joynt became the Executive Director of the Manitoba Arts Council in 2019. Randy’s dance career began through Ukrainian dance in his hometown of Meacham, Saskatchewan and his career has led him to work with dance companies in Winnipeg, Ottawa and Montreal, as well as co-founding TRIP Dance Company in Winnipeg with Karen Kuzak.

As a passionate advocate for the role arts and culture plays in healthy societies, Randy has served as a board member for several organizations including Manitobans for the Arts, the Canadian Dance Assembly, the Winnipeg Arts Council, the B.C. Alliance for Arts and Culture and ProArt.

Angela Cassie, Interim Director and CEO, National Gallery of Canada

Currently the Interim Director and CEO, Angela Cassie first joined the National Gallery of Canada in January 2021 as Vice-President of Strategic Transformation and Inclusion. Fluently bilingual, Angela served for 10 years in progressively senior roles at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) in Winnipeg before stepping down in 2019 to pursue a mini-MBA at the McGill Executive Institute. Angela began her career at the Department of Canadian Heritage from 1998 to 2008 and served as Regional Director of Communications and Executive Services (Prairies and Northern Region).

Angela serves as the President of the Board of the Société de la Francophonie manitobaine and has recently completed the 2022 Governor General’s Canadian Leadership Conference.

Crystal Kolt, Cultural Coordinator, Flin Flon Arts Council

Crystal Kolt is the Cultural Coordinator of the Flin Flon Arts Council. Crystal served on the Culture Days founding task force committee, the Manitoba Arts Council Board of Directors, the International Council for the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and is presently the chair of the Executive Council for the proposed North Central Canada Centre of Arts and Environment. Crystal has produced numerous musical theatre and classical masterworks productions and in 2020 she guided the Flin Flon Arts Council in the founding of the Uptown Emporium which was created to support the economic development of northern artists and artisans.

Genevieve Pelletier, Direction artistique et générale/Artistic and general direction, Théâtre Cercle Molière

Geneviève Pelletier est comédienne et metteure en scène Métisse francophone de la vallée de la Rivière Rouge. Depuis 2012, elle est à la barre de la direction artistique du Théâtre Cercle Molière, à Saint-Boniface. Elle s’intéresse aux croisements des cultures et des multiples possibilités s’ouvrant dans ce monde qui devient de plus en plus petit, provoquant des espaces de création fertiles et complexes.

Geneviève Pelletier is a Francophone Métis actor and theater director from the Red River Valley. Since 2012, she has been the artistic and general director of le Théâtre Cercle Molière in Saint-Boniface. She is interested in nurturing a fertile creative space that includes as many cultures as there are voices, one that reflects the various communities she is engaged with.

Alan Wong, Executive Director, Gimli Film Festival

With a strong background in the performing arts, arts administration and project management, Alan Wong strives to foster a healthy, robust artistic and cultural community as the Executive Director of the Gimli International Film Festival (GIFF). With more than 20 years of experience in culture, arts and media, Alan is the founder and President of the FascinAsian Film Festival, an Asian-specific film festival held in both Winnipeg and Calgary, as well as the President.
